Can I Delete Hiberfil.sys

I noticed a 2GB file called hiberfil.sys on my C drive and wondered if I could delete it because it takes up too much storage on the drive. If someone could answer the question and help me free up the C drive, I would be extremely grateful.

Yes, you can delete the hiberfil.sys file if you are not planning on using the power-saving options.

The hibernation file stores the system data when the Windows system is set to hibernate. So, it is safe to remove hiberfil.sys from your PC.

You are allowed to delete hiberfil.sys only after disabling the hibernation feature in Windows. Here are the steps:

Step 1. Search for cmd in the Start menu, right-click on Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator."

Step 2. In the Command Prompt window, type the command and press ”Enter”: powercfg -h off

Windows will automatically delete the hiberfil.sys file. You can also input powercfg -h on to re-enable hibernation.

If you have trouble disabling it via Command Prompt, you can use a third-party tool - EaseUS Partition Master Free, which offers a simple option to disable hibernation and even allows you to safely move pagefile.sys to another drive. (So that you can free up the C drive more)
