I have a Crucial S6 external SSD, and I have formatted it to exFAT. Since upgrading to Sonoma a week ago and every now and then, my SSD has been corrupted. I always make sure it is ejected properly, but it has happened on more than 2 or 3 occasions. I can’t repair it using Disk Utility, and it now reads fairly slowly. This was never an issue with Ventura, and it was read almost immediately.

If you have upgraded your macOS and your external SSD suddenly corrupts and reads very slowly on your Mac or even stops showing up, you can try First Aid. But if the Disk Utility fails, the last resort is to reset the NVRAM. The step-by-step guide is as follows to fix external SSD corrupting after upgrading to Sonoma:
Step 1. On the top-left screen, click the Apple logo and choose "Restart" from the menu.
Step 2. Hold Command + Option + P + R keys to boot up the system.
Step 3. Your Mac will restart again. Now, you can release the keys when the Apple logo appears on the screen or after you hear the shutdown sound.
Step 4. Now, wait until it boots up.
For your information, if you are using the newest generation of Mac, you probably do not need to restart it. You just need to hold all the keys we mentioned above, and your NVRAM will reset automatically.
